Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume on Wednesday led delegates from the North Central geopolitical zone in endorsing President Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the 2027 presidential election.
SGF Akume, who is the leader of the APC in the zone, moved the motion, during the party’s zonal meeting of its leaders and stakeholders in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, and it was seconded by Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Delegates unanimously approved the motion amid loud applauses.
Special Adviser to the SGF on Media and Publicity Yomi Odunuga in a statement said the declaration event drew Governors from the zone, former governors and their deputies, members of the National and State Assemblies, Ministers, and other political figures.
Speaking, SGF Akume described the endorsement as a sign of confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership and his administration’s push to stabilize the economy, build infrastructure, and foster national unity.
As the zone’s APC leader, he said he was responsible for uniting stakeholders.
“The North Central has done so much for this country to preserve the country’s unity,”
SGF Akume told the leaders, “Nigerians are proud of you. And we must be proud of ourselves. Our governors and ministers are performing exceptionally. … North Central will provide the highest number of votes amongst the six geopolitical zones.”
Akume urged party members to unite, arguing that an early consensus on President Tinubu would give the APC a strategic edge ahead of the elections.
NewsQuest reports that the move reflects ongoing efforts within the APC to consolidate support for President Tinubu, who won the presidency in 2023 in the midst of economic challenges including inflation and currency devaluation, and insecurity.
