Former Nigerian military Leader from 1966 to 1975, General Yakubu Gowon on Saturday met with President Bola Tinubu in a closed-door session at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President Bayo Onanuga, in a statement described the encounter on Facebook as a courtesy visit.
“Two weeks after General T.Y. Danjuma paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Tinubu at the Villa, another elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd) … also came calling,” Mr. Onanuga wrote, sharing a State House photo.
The meeting follows a private session between the two leaders in February 2024, during which General Gowon praised President Tinubu’s early initiatives and called for patience in evaluating his administration.

Our correspondent gathered that General Gowon, a respected elder statesman, often engages on issues of governance and national stability.
Tinubu has publicly celebrated Gowon multiple times, including on his 89th birthday in 2023, praising his role in post-Civil War reconciliation, state creation, and founding the NYSC.
In August 2024, Gowon joined other ex-leaders like Abdulsalami Abubakar, Buhari, and Jonathan in passing a vote of confidence on President Tinubu’s leadership.
