Tinubu hosts Governors for breaking of fast in Aso Rock

President Bola Tinubu on Monday hosted Governors in an inter-faith Ramadan iftar dinner at the Presisential Villa, Abuja, continuing an annual tradition now in its third year.

The President was joined by his Vice, Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, Special Adviaer on Information and Strategy Bayo Onamuga, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Sunday Dare, and other senior presidential aides.

The gathering, which is ongoing, began before 7pm, brought together Senator Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Babagana Zulum (Borno), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Mohammed Bago (Niger), Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano) and Agbu Kefas (Taraba), as well as the Bauchi State Deputy Governor and senior government functionaries attended.

NewsQuest reports that the event indicates President Tinubu’s practice of convening political and government figures during the holy month to break the daily fast.

In previous years, he has used the occasions to press for unity and effective governance.

President Tinubu at last year’s similar event told Governors and Ministers to “do more for your people” and portrayed Nigeria as “one big family living under the same roof”, transcending religious and ethnic divides.

In 2024, the President urged leaders to shelve political rivalries, insisting: “The time for politics is over. It is now time for governance.”

Further iftars are anticipated with traditional rulers and diplomats.

The tradition echoes that of President Tinubu’s predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, who similarly hosted lawmakers, judges and party figures during past Ramadans.
