FG warns citizens over illegal recruitment into foreign wars

The Federal Government has issued an urgent warning to Nigerians against falling prey to scams promising lucrative jobs abroad that lead to frontline combat in foreign conflicts.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Sunday expressed “grave concern” over a surge in cases where Nigerians are being lured with false offers of high-paying security roles, education opportunities or migration perks, only to be coerced into military service in war zones.

Reports in some sections of the media detail how recruits—often young and vulnerable—are tricked into signing contracts in unfamiliar languages, then have their passports seized upon arrival.

NewsQuest gathered that intermediaries allegedly arrange travel on tourist visas, dangling monthly salaries, bonuses and fast-track citizenship.

“Such actions not only endanger lives but may also violate Nigerian and international laws,” the Ministry said.

The statement stressed that participants act at their own peril outside official channels.

The government is probing the issue with domestic and global partners, while directing embassies to ramp up consular support.

The Federal Government has also called on parents, community leaders and schools to educate youth on the risks, urging verification of all overseas offers through official routes.

Nigeria has seen thousands emigrate amid economic hardship, vowed to protect its citizens from exploitation in foreign conflicts.
