Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike said the capital would back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, as leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) pledged to set aside partisan rivalry and mobilize voters for the president.
Wike, a former PDP governor now serving in Tinubu’s cabinet, made the declaration at a stakeholders’ meeting in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), attended by party officials, traditional rulers, women’s groups and youth representatives.
The meeting underscored Wike’s effort to assemble a cross-party political operation in the FCT, where he has been appointed to coordinate Tinubu’s campaign alongside efforts in Rivers State.
He said the arrangement, described by supporters as a “Rainbow Coalition,” would bring the APC, PDP and other political groups behind a common objective.
FCT APC Chairman Ishaku Yamawo said political differences should not prevent leaders and residents from cooperating, while PDP Chairman Mohammed Dogara said his party’s grassroots structures would join the mobilization.
Wike framed the emerging alliance as a response to the administration’s infrastructure and economic agenda.
He cited the long-delayed Apo-Karshi Road, saying work resumed after 16 years and that the project is expected to be commissioned in November.
He also defended the removal of the petrol subsidy, calling it a difficult but necessary measure that previous administrations had avoided despite acknowledging its fiscal burden.
Increased statutory allocations to states and local governments, he argued, had strengthened their ability to fund infrastructure.
Wike urged residents, particularly young people, to participate in the 2027 election and support Tinubu and allied candidates.
He said a comprehensive campaign council would be inaugurated next week and that logistics for the mobilization effort had been secured.
The declarations mark an early organizing push rather than a measure of the electoral outcome.
They also highlight a potential source of tension within the PDP: a faction led by Kabiru Turaki has rejected Wike’s call for PDP members to back Tinubu, calling it self-serving support for the governing party.
