Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Monday dismissed reports that he was angling to become Director-General of the All Progressives Congress’s presidential campaign council ahead of the 2027 election.
The Minister said he does not need an official title to back President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
Wike’s clarification was issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, who called the reports false.
A story in parts of the press had named Wike among senior APC figures purportedly lobbying for or under consideration for the campaign DG post.
“Olayinka said Wike had not discussed either the leadership or membership of the campaign council with anyone,” the aide said, adding that the Minister is currently abroad on a rest break after more than 30 days of project inaugurations and inspections in the Federal Capital Territory.
On his return, Minister Wike said his priorities would remain the implementation of government programmes in the FCT and shoring up President Tinubu’s political standing in Rivers State and the capital.
“I do not need to be the DG or even a member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr. President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
Minister Wike has publicly backed President Tinubu’s administration and his bid for a second term in recent months.
