The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill on Thursday said it has extended the deadline for the submission of memoranda and position papers to Aug. 21, 2026 at 5 p.m. West Africa Time.
Chief of Staff to the President who serves as Chairman of the group, Femi Gbajabiamila said in a statement, that the move is intended to give stakeholders more time to prepare detailed contributions to a bill envisioned to reshape the country’s policing architecture.
Gbajabiamila explained that the extension also aims to ensure wider participation from legal practitioners, civil-society groups, security professionals, state governments, academics and other interested parties.
“The Working Group is committed to broad consultation and the informed perspectives of Nigerians and relevant stakeholders,” the statement said.
He said submissions must be uploaded through the bill’s official portal, nationalpolicingbill.com, by the new deadline.
The proposed legislation, according to the group, seeks to set out the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for an “effective policing architecture” that addresses evolving security challenges while embedding safeguards for accountability, professionalism and citizens’ rights.
He highlighted a range of complex issues for consideration, including sustainable funding, command-and-control arrangements, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency coordination, accountability mechanisms and protections against political interference.
The Working Group said it will compile stakeholder input into an implementation-ready draft of the bill for onward legislative processing.
The Chief of Staff thanked those who have already submitted papers and urged others to use the extended window to contribute.
The working group had earlier assured that contributions from Nigerians at home and abroad, professional bodies, civil society, security institutions, and other stakeholders will be organized thematically and considered in drafting the final bill to be approved by President Bola Tinubu and sent to the National Assembly.
