Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has appealed to passengers and other airport users to remain understanding over the planned temporary closure of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for about 25 days to allow for runway rehabilitation and extension.
Keyamo, in a statement, said the closure would commence on October 20, 2026, to facilitate repairs, resurfacing and extension of the runway ahead of the Christmas travel season.
The closure of the airport was announced by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
He said the decision followed consultations with Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, and other stakeholders in the state and the South-East, who agreed on the need to temporarily close the runway to enable contractors to carry out the required works.
According to the minister, the project is a joint initiative of the Federal Government, through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and the Imo State Government.
Keyamo explained that the rehabilitation would address deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, extensive surface cracks and potholes, as well as provide for resurfacing and extension works.
He said the project was expected to improve the runway’s safety and reliability while enhancing its capacity to accommodate larger aircraft, including wide-body aircraft, subject to applicable operational and regulatory requirements.
The minister acknowledged that the temporary closure would inconvenience passengers and other airport users but stressed that the intervention was necessary to ensure safe and efficient airport operations.
“Whilst we recognise that the temporary closure will cause some inconvenience to passengers and other airport users, we appeal for their understanding and cooperation”, adding that “Aviation safety cannot be compromised.”
Keyamo noted that the timing of the rehabilitation was important because passenger traffic and flight movements to Owerri and other parts of the South-East traditionally increase during the Christmas travel season.
He said the government was committed to ensuring that the airport’s infrastructure could support safe and efficient operations during the festive period and beyond.
The minister added that the federal government would continue to engage the Imo State Government, airlines and other stakeholders to coordinate the project and minimise disruptions to travellers.
He advised passengers scheduled to use the airport during the closure period to contact their respective airlines for information on flight cancellations, rescheduling and alternative travel arrangements.
Keyamo said the confirmed closure and reopening dates would be communicated through the appropriate official channels.
He also acknowledged the Imo State Government’s contribution to the runway extension project, expressing appreciation to Uzodimma and other stakeholders for their cooperation.
The minister said the project was part of broader efforts to improve aviation infrastructure and strengthen air connectivity in the South-East.
