Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the display of the preliminary voters’ register nationwide and the commencement of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) distribution for newly registered voters.

The exercise, running Friday through October 15, lets registered voters inspect their details, file claims or objections and collect cards from the first phase of continuous registration held between August and December 2025.

The Independent National Electoral Commission is conducting the preliminary register display and PVC distribution simultaneously across states, including Plateau and Sokoto.

In Plateau, the process is taking place in all 207 registration areas from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, including weekends.

The commission says the review is required under Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which obliges it to publish the voter register at least 90 days before general elections.

Voters are being asked to confirm personal information such as names, photographs, dates of birth and polling units.

In Sokoto, Resident Electoral Commissioner Umar Garba said cards tied to lost or damaged PVCs, transfers, updates and registrations from the second and third phases of continuous voter registration are not yet available.

INEC will announce their release separately, he said.

After the registration-area phase ends October 15, card distribution will continue at INEC offices across Sokoto’s 23 local government areas for voters unable to collect their cards during the initial window.

Garba said the commission consulted security agencies throughout recent registration activity, which he said helped keep the process safe.

INEC is also working with security officials to identify internally displaced people in recognized camps and determine how they can participate in the 2027 vote.

The rollout comes as the national voter register has risen above 103 million people, following a three-phase registration drive that added more than 10.6 million new applicants.

INEC has also completed a biometric cleanup of the register, according to commission chairman Joash Amupitan.
