Members of the House of Representatives Committee overseeing the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) expressed satisfaction with the progress of work on the agency’s new headquarters in Enugu, describing the facility as central to efforts to accelerate development in the region.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Chris Nkwonta, led lawmakers on an oversight visit to the site on Saturday, commending the Managing Director for the significant progress recorded in the construction of the headquarters building.
He said the headquarters would serve as an institutional anchor for the commission’s work across the South-East’s five states.
Nkwonta said the commission’s establishment would help translate the philosophy of the “Three Rs”– reconstruction, rehabilitation, and reconciliation, formulated after the civil war into practical development programs.
He said the agency’s presence and mandate offer an opportunity to address the lasting effects of the war, decades of underinvestment, and infrastructure deficits across the region.
Managing Director of the commission, Mark Okoye, said the headquarters, donated by the Enugu State Government, would strengthen the agency’s operational capacity and institutional efficiency.
Okoye said the facility would bring the commission’s departments, executive management, and staff under one roof, improving coordination, strategic planning, and project execution.
He added that consolidating operations would reduce administrative fragmentation, support long-term planning, and speed the implementation of regional development master plans.
