FG disbursed N5trn for military operations

The Federal Government has disbursed more than N5 trillion in special intervention funds into military operations and related security agencies nationwide since November 2023, in a major move to strengthen national security and combat insurgency, banditry and other emerging threats.

As the government escalates spending against insecurity and other emerging threats, Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) records show that a dedicated special intervention account received N5.65 trillion through 33 funding transactions and disbursed N5.15 trillion through 30 payments between November 8, 2023, and September 23, 2026—91.15% of total receipts.

The ledger was prepared by the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and presented to FAAC’s technical subcommittee on October 14.

The program initially followed a N100 billion monthly funding pattern, receiving and disbursing N1.2 trillion in 2024 and another N900 billion in the first nine months of 2025.

By September 2025, cumulative disbursements stood at N2.4 trillion.

Funding accelerated sharply in 2026, with individual transfers rising to between N200 billion and N500 billion.

The account received N3.25 trillion through October 14, compared with N1.2 trillion for all of 2024, while disbursements reached N2.75 trillion —more than the combined N2.4 trillion released from November 2023 through September 2025.

The largest recorded disbursements included N500 billion each in June, July and August 2026.

A further N500 billion transfer recorded on October 14 had not been matched by a payment in the ledger, leaving a N500 billion balance, funds available in the account rather than money already released to security agencies.

The documents do not break down the disbursements by operation, equipment purchases, personnel costs or security projects.

That lack of detail limits public visibility into how the additional resources are being deployed, even as insecurity persists across the North-East, North-West and North-Central regions.

In the North-East, the military continues operations against Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP); banditry and mass kidnappings remain acute concerns in parts of the North-West and North-Central.

Armed-group attacks have caused deaths, displacement and disruption to farming and other economic activity.

Separately, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu inaugurated a 33-member committee Thursday to review Nigeria’s 2019 National Security Strategy and produce a new framework for 2026.

The panel must submit its final draft by November 27.

Ribadu said the new strategy must address terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, cyber threats, misinformation, food insecurity and environmental pressures, and align security with economic transformation and national cohesion.

Committee Deputy Chairman retired Maj. Gen. Evi Onumajuru said conventional and non-kinetic threats have become increasingly intertwined, requiring a broader strategic response.
