Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, has said President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms are yielding positive results, with improving growth indicators and renewed investor confidence in the nation’s economy, despite early doubts about whether the measures could be sustained.
Speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok ,Thailand, Bagudu credited President Bola Tinubu with providing the political will to push through changes that have tested public patience but, in the government’s view, improved Nigeria’s economic footing.
The Minister said closer alignment between fiscal and monetary policy would be essential to locking in the gains and meeting the administration’s growth targets through 2030.
He argued that lessons from earlier policy missteps had sharpened the government’s approach to implementation.
Bagudu also pointed to what he described as growing international confidence in Nigeria’s governance, transparency and economic management.
He praised Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele and other officials for their role in advancing the reform agenda.
The remarks come as Nigerian officials seek to reassure investors that the government won’t reverse its most consequential reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of exchange rates.
Oyedele said this week that restoring subsidies or multiple exchange-rate regimes could trigger capital flight and undermine the country’s progress.
Bagudu described Tinubu as a “visionary leader” whose decisions reflected courage and commitment to national development.
He urged officials and other stakeholders to maintain cooperation, saying the administration remains determined to sustain the momentum.
The IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok ran from October 12 to 18, bringing together policymakers from 191 member countries.
