Nigerian Army begins inquiry into officer accused of abusing teenager inTaraba

The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into allegations that a serving captain sexually assaulted a 13-year-old deaf and non-speaking girl in Taraba State, after the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) pressed for disciplinary action.

Captain Etim Essien, posted to the Headquarters of the Army’s 3 Division in Jos, is accused of repeatedly abusing the teenager while she was living under the care of his family in Taraba.

Reports say the girl, described as his wife’s younger step-sister, was taken into the household so she could attend school, and that the abuse occurred over a period of time while she was in their custody.

Some accounts allege the minor was impregnated as a result of the abuse, though the Army’s statement did not address that detail.

In a statement released Saturday, Lt.-Col. Olumide Victor Olukoya, acting Deputy-Director of Public Relations for the 3 Division, said the military was “aware of reports circulating online” and had begun steps to establish the facts.

He emphasized that the Army treats allegations of sexual abuse, especially those involving minors and vulnerable persons, “with utmost seriousness,” and cautioned against drawing conclusions while the probe is ongoing.

“The Nigerian Army is also aware that the relevant civil authorities are looking into the matter and will cooperate fully with them to ensure that the allegation is thoroughly and transparently investigated in accordance with extant laws and regulations,” the statement said.

Olukoya added that any personnel found to have violated the law or service regulations would face “appropriate disciplinary action” once the investigation concludes.

The Army also urged the public to avoid speculation and the spread of unverified information that could prejudice the investigation or harm the privacy and well-being of those involved, particularly the minor.

The Taraba State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development and the state chapter of the NHRC have been investigating the case and, according to reports, asked the Army to take administrative and disciplinary steps against the officer.

A formal letter dated September 8 from the ministry to the Chief of Army Staff flagged the allegations and sought action, underscoring the gravity of a case involving a physically challenged child.

The Army’s inquiry will run alongside civil investigations, with the military pledging full cooperation.

If the probe substantiates the allegations, the officer could face both military disciplinary measures and potential criminal proceedings under Nigerian law.
