ECOWAS set to give update on Niger military crisis

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is set this morning to give an update on the current situation in Niger Republic since the military seized power, detaining its President Muhammed Bazoun and his family.

Following the coup on July 26, ECOWAS imposed several sanctions on the francophone country, including cutting off electricity  supply, to compel the military leaders to reinstate the ousted President.

The junta has however defiantly refused to yield to entreaties and diplomatic pressure to reinstate President Bazoum despite a seven-day ultimatum that was handed down by the sub-regional bloc.

Leader of the junta, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, announced recently they will only return power to a democratically elected government after three years.

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu who is the current chairman of ECOWAS met at the presidential villa with the latest of the delegations from Nigeria to Niger, an Islamic Cleric group, where he said that he was holding back other leaders of the ECOWAS from carrying out their collective threat on the military junta in Niger.

There are high expectations about what actions the regional body will announce this morning at a press conference by President of ECOWAS who will be joined by six commissioners.
