President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Under-17 women’s national football team – the Flamingos on Thursday after they defeated Brazil 3-1 to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time, setting up a title match against Japan in Morocco.
The President described the semifinal victory as a “remarkable feat” that had brought pride to Nigerians at home and abroad, and praised the players, coaching staff and support personnel for their performance throughout the tournament.
The win in Rabat made the Flamingos the first African nation to reach the competition’s final, surpassing the team’s previous best finish of third place in 2022.
With Japan awaiting in Saturday’s final, President Tinubu urged the players to remain focused, confident and determined, saying the country’s prayers and support were behind them.
“I encourage you to approach the final with the same fighting spirit and belief that have brought you this far,” the President said, adding that, “I have confidence in your ability to make history by winning the coveted world title.”
He also called on Nigerians to rally behind the team, describing the Flamingos as ambassadors whose success could inspire a new generation of girls to pursue their ambitions.
Nigeria will face a Japan side that eliminated defending champion North Korea on penalties after a 1-1 semifinal draw.
Japan won the tournament in 2014 and is seeking a second title.
“Once again, Nigeria is proud of you,” Tinubu said.
“Go for the trophy, Flamingos!”, he added.
